Printful design size, Printify and Redbubble: what each product needs
For a t-shirt front, a 4500 × 5400 px transparent PNG works on Printful, Printify and Redbubble, because it covers a 15 × 18 inch print area at 300 DPI. Other products need their own size.
A mug, a poster and Redbubble’s all-products upload each have a different shape, and Printify’s print area changes with the provider you choose.
Pick your platform and product in the POD design size guide for the pixels, DPI, file type and a link to that platform’s own spec.

Where these sizes come from
Pixels are the print area times the DPI. A 12 × 16 in t-shirt print at 300 DPI needs 3600 × 4800 px. Printful asks for at least 150 DPI and no more than 300, with 300 for stickers and phone cases.
Platforms change their products and print areas, and on Printify every print provider has its own. Each size here says where it comes from, and the product page on the platform always has the final word.
Save files as PNG with a transparent background, in sRGB. JPG has no transparency, so the background would print as a box.

Key takeaways
- Pixel size = print area in inches × DPI. Everything else follows from that.
- 4500 × 5400 px is a shirt-front size. Using it for mugs or Redbubble’s full catalog gives small or cropped prints.
- Printful asks for at least 150 DPI on most products. Aim for 300 on anything viewed up close.
- On Printify, the same shirt can have a different print area with each print provider. Check the provider, not just the product.
- Platform specs change. Treat any number here, including the tool’s, as a starting point and confirm it in the platform’s editor before launch.
How to use the POD design size guide
The guide turns a platform and a product into four answers: the pixel size, the DPI, the file type and a link to the platform’s own guide.
- Pick the platform: Printful, Printify or Redbubble.
- Pick the product, such as a unisex tee, an 11 oz mug or a poster.
- Build your canvas at the pixel size shown, and export in the file type shown.
- Open the platform link and compare. If the platform shows a different number for your exact product or provider, use the platform’s number.
DPI (dots per inch) is how many pixels land on each printed inch. A 12-inch-wide print at 300 DPI needs 3600 px across.
Where 4500 × 5400 comes from, and where it breaks
The 4500 × 5400 figure is simply a 15 × 18 inch print area at 300 DPI. Printful lists 12 × 16 inches as its standard t-shirt print area and is moving select DTG products to 15 × 18 (Printful print file guide). A file built for the bigger area covers both.
A Printful 11 oz mug has a print area of about 9 × 3.5 inches (same Printful guide). Drop a 4500 × 5400 portrait file onto it and the 3.5-inch height limits the whole design, which ends up under 3 inches wide on a mug that wraps 9 inches. A mug needs a wide file, about 2700 × 1050 px at 300 DPI.
Redbubble works differently from the other two. You upload one image and Redbubble places it across its whole product range. Its own help center recommends at least 9075 × 6201 px, a landscape shape, to cover every product (Redbubble Help). A portrait shirt file shows up small on the wide products.
Worked example: one design, three platforms
An example to show the process: you finish a mountain-and-moon illustration and want it on a unisex tee through Printful, the same tee through Printify, and on Redbubble.
For Printful, the guide points to a 4500 × 5400 transparent PNG. Your file covers the 15 × 18 area at 300 DPI, so it’s done.
For Printify, you open the tee in the catalog and find that providers offer different print areas for the same blank, for example 12 × 16 inches with one provider and 15 × 18 with another.
Printify’s help center confirms print areas depend on the provider and the garment size (Printify Help). Your 4500 × 5400 file fits the largest area, so it scales down cleanly for the smaller ones.
For Redbubble, you upload a separate landscape version: the illustration centered on a 9075 × 6201 px transparent canvas. The shirt uses the middle, and wide products like mugs and laptop sleeves get the full width instead of a small square.
Run each product through the design size guide before you export.
The mistake hiding inside a “big enough” file
A canvas can be 4500 × 5400 px while the artwork on it is much smaller. If you drew a 2000-px-wide logo and placed it in the middle of a big transparent canvas, the logo still has only 2000 pixels across.
Stretch that logo to fill a 12-inch print width and it prints at about 167 DPI. That passes Printful’s 150 floor and looks soft up close. Before you upload, check the size of the artwork itself, not the canvas. The image DPI checker shows what a file supports at a given print size, and the DPI calculator gives the pixels for any area.
Common sizing mistakes
- Designing at social media sizes. A 1080 × 1350 Instagram canvas stretched to 12 inches wide is 90 DPI, and it will print blurry.
- Setting “300 DPI” in the export box and calling it done. The DPI label changes nothing if the pixel count is too low.
- Using JPEG for apparel. JPEG has no transparency, so the background prints as a box on the shirt. Use PNG for anything printed on fabric.
- Exporting in CMYK. POD printers work from RGB files. RGB vs CMYK explains why your colors shift.
- Copying one blog’s size table. Product sizes and providers change. The platform’s editor is the final word, which is why the guide links straight to it.
Which size to build first
- Shirts only, on Printful or Printify: one 4500 × 5400 transparent PNG covers almost every front print.
- Adding Redbubble: make a second, landscape master at 9075 × 6201 px. Redbubble lets you adjust the image per product, so the shirt can use a tighter crop [VERIFY: confirm Redbubble still allows a different image or placement per product].
- Mugs, phone cases or posters: give each shape its own file. A poster at 18 × 24 inches needs 5400 × 7200 px at 300 DPI, which is a different shape from a shirt.
- Large all-over prints, blankets or leggings: 150 DPI is usually accepted, because 300 DPI on a print that size makes very large files. Check the product’s guideline before dropping below 300.

FAQ
What size should a Printful design be?
It depends on the product. For most t-shirts, 4500 × 5400 px at 300 DPI covers the largest front print area, and Printful requires at least 150 DPI for most products. Open the File guidelines tab on the product page for the exact template.
What is the Printify design size for a t-shirt?
It depends on which print provider you choose, because providers print the same blank with different print areas. Open the product in Printify’s editor and check the print file requirements shown for that provider. A 4500 × 5400 px PNG fits the largest common areas.
What image size does Redbubble need?
Redbubble recommends at least 9075 × 6201 px to cover every product with one upload. If you only sell shirts, a smaller portrait file works, but wide products will show it small.
Is 150 DPI good enough for print on demand?
For large items seen from a distance, such as blankets and all-over prints, it usually is. For shirts, mugs and posters people look at up close, 300 DPI gives sharper edges, especially on text and thin lines.
Should I upload a PNG or JPEG?
Use PNG with a transparent background for apparel and anything where the product color shows around the design. JPEG works for posters and full-bleed prints where every pixel is covered.
Can I upscale a small design for print on demand?
You can, and AI upscalers do a decent job on clean artwork. Upscaling doesn’t add real detail, so fine text or textures may look smeared. Check the result at 100% zoom before uploading.
Before you upload the next design
Look up the product in the POD design size guide, build the canvas at that size, then open the platform’s own spec from the link and confirm the number for your exact product and provider. If you design in Canva, how to create a 300 DPI image in Canva walks through the export.
